Cooking Oatmeal Basics
Single serving: 1/2c fresh milled oats, 1c water
Note: You can substitute ANY liquid to make your oatmeal, e.g. milk, cider, coffee (yes we've tried!), apple juice, pomegranate juice and even beer, well it's been suggested to me, haven't done it yet!
Stove: ~8-10 min on the stove. Easiest to bring the water to a boil first, add oats, reduce heat (simmer) and cover. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pan. Once you reach your desired consistency, I add my peanut butter & honey so it melts in, Yummm! Or just add your fruit and brown sugar, etc. You can also add your fruit when you add your oats to the water/cider to soften the fruit (apples especially) and bring out the flavors into the oatmeal.
Microwave: ~2 minutes. It may be longer or shorter depending on the power rating of your microwave. And beware of the expanding bowl of oatmeal--see below.

YIKES! EXPANDING OATMEAL!!
Oats seem to get a bit ornery in the microwave. Beware of the last 30 seconds, you may want to stop at 1:30 and let them finish cooking on the counter, usually for 2-3 min, which gives you a chance to make your coffee! People have also reported success (no overflow!) by reducing power (setting at 5-6) and adding a minute to the cook time (3 min vs 2 min)--Thanks Bill! (in Toledo) |
